56 - AC through an inductor
We know that an inductor resists a change in current due to its self-inductance.
When an inductor is connected to an AC source, the current will repeatedly change in magnitude and direction, and this inductor will try to oppose that change, limiting the current in the circuit.
This exact opposition is called the inductive reactance, and is denoted by the symbol
Inductive reactance is dependent on the frequency of the applied AC voltage, because the faster the change the more the inductor will try to oppose it. Therefore, we get
